About

History

This project started in 2019 when I first started learning how to code and wrote my first web scraper to get card prices from TCGPlayer. Later I learned what an API is and let go of my web scraper. I won my college's business plan competition in 2021, which gave me a little money to hire some developers to help me with some features, but none of those really worked out.

It took me a couple of years of learning to finally get a website live, which first took form as www.tieronemarketspace.com in 2022, then www.yugiohmarketnews.com which launched in 2023, and now finally www.tcgmarketnews.com which launched in 2024 and covers all major TCGs.

Goals

The goal is to continue to fine-tune and expand this tool to provide trading card game market watchers with the best analysis and data possible. Currently that takes the form of the winners and losers view, which utilizes my own analysis and draws on experience from years of monitoring markets to filter out irrelevant price movements (though the TCGPlayer price data is not perfect, so neither is my analysis, but I'm trying my best).

I have started several more features and released some, and those will continue to develop as well, but the market analysis is the core of this site and will be priority number 1.

About the Developer

Michael Larson

Michael Larson

When I'm not working on this site, I am usually hanging out with my fiancé in Kirkland, Washington, crafting a terrible 60-card Yu-Gi-Oh! deck, or playing NBA Live 2005 on the PlayStation 2 with my friends. I document a lot of my journey learning how to build an online business on Twitter, so if you want to follow along, find me there!

Feedback

If you have any feedback, please join my Discord and let me know, because my knowledge of TCGs beyond Yu-Gi-Oh! is growing but still limited.

How to Use TCG Market News

Navigation

Use the category buttons at the top to switch between different trading card games (Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, Magic, etc.). Click on any category to see its top winners and losers, indexes, and latest sets.

The search bar in the header allows you to quickly find specific cards. Select your category from the dropdown, then type the card name.

Winners & Losers

Toggle between WIN and LOSE to see which cards are gaining or losing value. Each card shows:

  • Price Change: Both dollar amount and percentage
  • Price History Chart: Visual representation of price trends
  • Card Details: Set name, rarity, and card number

💡 Tip: Click the expand button on any card to see detailed price history and market commentary!

Filters

Use the filter options to narrow down your results:

  • Period: Choose timeframe (1D, 7D, 1M, 3M, 6M, 1Y, All)
  • Release Date: Filter by year or custom date range
  • Rarity: Select specific card rarities
  • Type: Filter by card type (Monster, Spell, Trap, etc.)
  • Set: View cards from specific sets
  • Price: Set custom price ranges
  • Sealed: Toggle to show/hide sealed products

Watchlists & Portfolios

Watchlists: Track cards you're interested in. Click the + button on any card to add it to a watchlist. Monitor price changes and performance over time.

Portfolios: Record your actual purchases with details like quantity, purchase price, and fees. Track your investment performance and total value.

💡 Tip: Create separate watchlists for different strategies (e.g., "Short-term flips", "Long-term holds", "Budget picks")

Market Commentary

Cards with a green news badge have expert commentary explaining price movements. Click the badge or expand the card to read insights about why prices are changing.

Indexes

Indexes track the overall performance of specific card categories (like "Starlight Rares" or "Meta Staples"). Use them to understand broader market trends and compare against your own collection's performance.
